Introducing the new Bowers & Wilkins 800 D5 Diamond Series Speakers

For sixty years, Bowers & Wilkins has chased a singular, obsessive goal: to build a loudspeaker that doesn't sound like a speaker at all, but rather like the raw, unfiltered performance itself. This tradition has continued with the new B&W 800 D5 Diamond Series.

As your premier high-end home audio partner here at Safe and Sound, we have watched every generation of the 800 Series push the boundaries of what’s sonically possible. But the leap from the beloved D4 generation to the brand-new D5 series introduces structural and acoustic upgrades that take resolution, imaging, and low-end control to a jaw-dropping new level.

Here is everything you need to know about what’s under the hood of the new D5 lineup, and how it improves upon the incredible D4 series.

800 Series D4 vs. New D5: What's Changed?
While the classic, majestic silhouette remains beautifully familiar—featuring the iconic Solid-Body Tweeter-on-Top and the striking Turbine Head midrange housing—the engineering is entirely transformed. B&W has trickled down its ultra-exclusive, top-tier engineering from the recent 800 Series Signature line into the standard D5 models, resulting in lower distortion, a more open soundstage, and superior dynamics.

The All-New Space Frame Bracing
While the D4 series utilized B&W’s proprietary Matrix interlocking wood bracing to keep the cabinets rigid, the D5 takes structural integrity a massive step forward.

The D5 range introduces an internal Space Frame Bracing system. This setup uses heavy-duty, parallel aluminum bracing rails reinforced horizontally and transversely. By bolting this space frame directly to the back of the internal Matrix structure, B&W has vastly minimized unwanted cabinet vibrations. When you listen to them, the cabinet completely vanishes, leaving you with a hyper-believable, three-dimensional soundstage.

Upgraded Crossovers & Lower-Distortion Motors
The heart and veins of the speaker have received a total overhaul. Every single midrange, bass/midrange, and bass drive unit across the D5 lineup features lower-distortion motor systems built to Signature-specification component tolerances.

Furthermore, the crossovers are mounted to massive, solid aluminum plates at the back of the speakers, directly coupled to the internal Space Frame Bracing. This anchors the crossover assemblies against mechanical energy. Combined with upgraded internal wiring harnesses and higher-grade terminal links, the music achieves a level of microscopic detail that makes your favorite tracks feel brand new.

Revised Aluminum Top Plates & Connolly Leather Trims
If you look at the top of the floorstanding cabinets, the aluminum plate bracing the upper section has been heavily revised using advanced computer simulation. It now features thicker aluminum ribbing for maximum stiffness and brand-new decoupling mounts to completely isolate the Turbine Head and tweeter bodies from the main bass cabinet. To top it off, B&W upgraded the premium Leather by Connolly trim with high-tech damping material right out of the Signature series to cancel out micro-resonances.

Tuned-Mass Damped Plinths
Bass accuracy relies entirely on how a speaker interacts with your floor. The new D5 floorstanders feature completely re-profiled, solid aluminum plinths. B&W didn't just alter the aesthetics by extending the lower lip to beautifully conceal the spikes and wheels; they engineered custom tuned-mass dampers inside the plinth itself. These are individually weighted to target and neutralize the specific resonant frequencies of each cabinet model, delivering a bass response that effortlessly balances massive scale with tight, analytical precision.
